Unshielded network cable: One of the mostly used categories of network cables is the Twisted Pair cable. These cables, unshielded in design, contain eight copper wires of 22 or 24 gauge and these cables are twisted to make four pairs. Shielded network cable: This cable is an enhanced version of the unshielded twisted cable in that it uses metallic foil for wrapping each of the pair and then a metallic braid to wrap all the four pairs together. Double-wrap is intended to make digital signal transfer safe from various types of hazards like interference of electromagnetic radiation. This network cable also suspends noise phenomena like crosstalk. However, this cable is very difficult to install because it comes with only two twisted pairs. Though it allows a network engineer to install it with RJ connector or STP connector, the installation process needs to be very careful to ensure that the metallic shields are not affected.

Crossover cable: Crossover cable alternatively called cross wired cable saves the cost of installing hubs or switches or even routers while connecting two computing devices. One end of the cable shows the switch with paired wires colored green and orange. This network cable is ideal for joining two PCs. However, in complex networks, this cable has limited use.

Stranded cable: This category of network cable is developed by blanketing a host of thin copper wires altogether. Stranded cables are best used in an environment where plugging, unplugging, installation are quite regular. Though stranded cables are very easy to bend, twist and flex, signal transmission never gets corrupted or lost.

Solid cable: This cable is mostly used in structured wiring because unlike the multiple thin wires in stranded cable, solid cable uses thick copper wires. Because solid cable has a single conductor, it can be utilized in insulation displacement connector too.
